Inside the Apple Shed

This is the Apple Shed, which is next to our cider orchard. It is my creative space where I make items for my online Etsy shop, and also where I store my vintage orchard themed products. It is a great space with views over the orchard. It is also a dual purpose space as family…

Spring is here?

Dare I say Spring is here? Have spotted almond blossom, daffodils and hawthorn blossom.

Orchard seasons

To celebrate the seasons in the orchard I made these little pictures. Each picture includes key features for the season with:  Spring – tree full of blossom and rabbits running around Summer – green leaves on the branches and bees busy collecting pollen Autumn – red, brown and orange leaves and apples ready to fall…

Blossom confetti, the smell of Spring

The results of my experiment drying out our apple blossom in the oven to make confetti. Not made much, only enough for one throw! Maybe more next year.  Most of the trees have now lost their blossom. The blossom magic is over so quickly but at least I have my confetti to remind me of…

Snowing blossom

A white carpet of blossom is beginning to appear under the trees. Today with a little wind it is almost like it is snowing.  The Bulmers Norman trees are first to bloom and first to fall.  Some trees haven’t even begun to blossom yet.

Blossom sprig

Nothing more pretty than a sprig of apple blossom in a vase.

Blossom!

More trees are starting to blossom. Note that some trees are in blossom and some are not. This is because some trees have bi annual blossom and others blossom later. Most of the trees currently in blossom are Bulmers Norman which also produce the earliest apples.

Blackbird chicks gone

Just checked the log store where the blackbird chicks were and the nest was overturned and the chicks have gone. Hoping the magpie didn’t get them and that they have fledged the nest. Looking at the RSPB website they can fledge as early as nine days old but typically it is 14 days. Fingers crossed…

Blackbird chicks one week old

Growing up fast! The chicks look more like birds and less like bald babies.  Sadly there are now only two chicks instead of three. I think a magpie may have stolen one from the nest today. I saw the blackbird parents having a scuffle with a magpie this morning. Hopefully the other two will survive…

Blackbird chicks four days old

Amazing what a few worms can do! The chicks are getting fatter and beginning to grow feathers. See blackbird chicks have hatched article
